Call to Worship
Let love and faithfulness never leave you
Write them on the tablet of your heart
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And lean not to your own understanding
In all your ways submit to him
And he will make your paths straight

Luke 9:51-62 New International Version – UK
Samaritan opposition
As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, ‘Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them
But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then he and his disciples went to another village.
As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’
Jesus replied, ‘Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
He said to another man, ‘Follow me.’
But he replied, ‘Lord, first let me go and bury my father.’
Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.’
Still another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.’
Jesus replied, ‘No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.’
CH4 166 /MP 882: “Lord of all hopefulness
1 Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
whose trust, ever child-like,
no cares could destroy,
be there at our waking,
and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord,
at the break of the day.
2 Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
whose strong hands were skilled
at the plane, and the lathe,
be there at our labours,
and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord,
at the noon of the day.
3 Lord of all kindness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome,
Your arms to embrace,
be there at our homing
and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord,
at the eve of the day.
4 Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm
who’s voice is contentment,
whose presence is balm,
be there at our sleeping,
and give us, we pray,
Your peace in our hearts, Lord.
at the end of the day.

MP 470 : My goal is God himself
1 My goal is God Himself,
nor joy, nor peace,
nor even blessing,
but Himself, my God;
’tis His to lead me there,
not mine, but His,
‘At any cost, dear Lord, by and road!’
2 So faith bounds forward
to its goal in God,
and love can trust her Lord
to lead her there;
upheld by Him
my soul is following hard,
till God, hath full fulfilled,
my deepest prayer.
3 No matter if the way
be something dark,
no matter though the cost,
be oft-times great,
He knoweth how,
I best shall reach the mark,
the way that leads to Him
must needs be strait.
4 One thing I know,
I cannot say Him nay;
one thing I do, I press toward my Lord,
My God, my glory here,
from day to day,
and in the glory there my great reward.
