Call to Worship
Whoever we are
We are known to God
Whatever we’ve done
We belong to God
Wherever we go
We are loved by God
When our way is joyful
God will rejoice with us
When the going is rough
God will wipe away our tears
We are God’s people, held in his love
Our hope is in the goodness of God
CH4 528/MP 456: Make me a channel
Psalm 109: 21 – 28a NIV
But my Sovereign Lord, help me as you have promised,
and rescue me because of the goodness of your love.
I am poor and needy;
I am hurt to the depths of my heart.
Like an evening shadow I am about to vanish;
I am blown away like an insect.
My knees are weak from lack of food;
I am nothing but skin and bones.
When people see me, they laugh at me;
they shake their heads in scorn.
Help me, O Lord my God;
because of your constant love, save me!
Make my enemies know
that you are the one who saves me.
They may curse me, but you will bless me.
John 5:1-9 New International Version – UK
Sometime later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades.
Here a great number of disabled people used to lie – the blind, the lame, the paralysed.
One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’
‘Sir,’ the invalid replied, ‘I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.’
Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’
At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.
The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
CH4 461/MP 251 : How sweet the name of Jesus
1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
in a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows,
heals his wounds,
and drives away his fear.
2 It makes the wounded spirit whole,
and calms the troubled breast;
’tis manna to the hungry soul,
and to the weary rest.
3 Dear name! the rock on which I build,
my shield and hiding place.
my never failing treasury, filled
with boundless stores of grace.
4 Jesus! my shepherd, brother, friend,
my Prophet, Priest and King;
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
accept the praise I bring
5 Weak is the effort of my heart
and cold my warmest thought;
but when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll believe Thee as Thou art,
6 Till then I would Thy love proclaimed
with every fleeting breath;
and may the music of Thy name
refresh my soul in death!
CH4 721 : We lay our broken world
our neighbours hurt and bruised;
you show us how old pains and wounds
for new life can be used.
friends parted, families torn;
then in your life and death we see
that love must be reborn.
CH4 192 / MP: 16 : All my hope
1 All my hope in God is founded,
all my trust He shall renew
He, my guide through changing order,,
only good and only true.
God unknown,
He alone
calls my heart to be His own.
2 Pride of men and earthly glory,
sword and crown betray His trust;
all that human toil can fashion,
tower and temple, fall to dust.
But God’s power,
hour by hour,
in my temple and my tower.
3 Day by day our mighty giver
grants to us His gifts of love;
in His will our souls find pleasure,
leading to our home above.
Love shall stand
at His hand,
joy shall wait for His command.
4 Still from man to God eternal
sacrifice of praise be done,
high above all praises praising
for the gift of Christ His Son.
Hear Christ’s call
one and all:
we who follow shall not fall.
