Call to Worship

Almighty God
Who sees the secret places of our hearts
Who discerns our thoughts and intentions
and from whom nothing in all creation is hidden
We draw near to you
by the mercy of your son
that your Holy Spirit may strengthen our innermost being

MP 988: How deep the fathers love

1 How deep the Father’s love for us,
how vast beyond all measure,
that He should give His only Son
to make a wretch His treasure,
How great the pain of searing loss –
the Father turns His face away,
as wounds which mar the chosen one
bring many sons to glory.
2 Behold the man upon a cross,
my sin upon His shoulders;
ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought my life –
I know that it is finished.
3 I will not boast in anything,
no gifts, no power, no wisdom;
but I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer,
but this I know with all my heart,
His wounds have pain my ransom.

CH4 530/JP 188: One more step

1 One more step along the world I go;
one more step along the world I go;
from the old things to the new
keep me travelling along with You:
Chorus: And it’s from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with You.
2 Round the corners of the world I turn,
more and more about the world I learn;
all the new things that I see
You’ll be looking at along with me:
3 As I travel through the bad and good,
keep me travelling the way I should;
where I see no way to go
You’ll be telling me the way, I know:
4 Give me courage when the world is rough,
keep me loving though the world is tough;
leap and sing in all I do,
keep me travelling along with You:
5 You are older than the world can be,
You are younger than the life in me;
ever old and ever new,
keep me travelling along with you:

Luke 13:1-9

Repent or perish

Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
Jesus answered, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?
I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.
Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them – do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?
I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.’
Then he told this parable: ‘A man had a fig-tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.
So, he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, “For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig-tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?”
‘“Sir,” the man replied, “leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig round it and fertilise it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.”’

MP 1350: Speak O Lord

1 Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
to receive the food of Your holy word.
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
shape and fashion us in Your likeness
that the light of Christ might be seen today
in our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfil in us
all Your purposes, for Your glory.
2 Teach us, Lord, full obedience,
holy reverence, true humility.
Test our thoughts and our attitudes
in the radiance of Your purity.
Cause our faith to rise, cause our eyes to see
Your majestic love and authority,
Words of power that can never fail;
let their truth prevail over unbelief.
3 Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
help us grasp the heights of Your plans for us.
Truth unchanged from the dawn of time
that will echo down through eternity,
And by grace we’ll stand on Your promises,
and by faith we’ll walk as You walk with us.
Speak, O Lord, till Your church is built
and the earth is filled with Your glory.

CH4 754 / MP 48 Be still and know

1 Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am God.
2 I am the Lord that healeth thee.
I am the Lord that healeth thee.
I am the Lord that healeth thee.
3 In Thee, O Lord, I put my trust.
In Thee, O Lord, I put my trust.
In Thee, O Lord, I put my trust.

CH4 459 / MP 109 : Crown him with many crowns

1 Crown Him with many crowns,
the Lamb upon His throne;
Hark! how the heavenly anthem
drowns all music but its own:
awake, my soul, and sing
of Him who died for thee,
and hail Him as thy chosen King
through all eternity.
2 Crown Him the Son of God
before the worlds began;
and ye who tread where He hath trod,
crown Him the Son of Man,
who every grief hath known
that wrings the human breast,
and takes and bears them for Him own,
that all in Him may rest.
3 Crown Him the Lord of life,
who triumphed o’er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife,
for those He came to save:
His glories now we sing,
who died and rose on high,
who died external life to bring,
and lives that death may die.
4 Crown Him the Lords of heaven,
enthroned in worlds above;
crown Him the King to whom is given
the wondrous name of Love:
all hail, Redeemer hail!
for Thou hast died for me;
Thy praise shall never, never fail
throughout eternity.
