Call to Worship
In you, Lord my God, I put my trust.
I trust in you; do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me.
No one who hopes in you will ever be put to shame, but shame will come on those who are treacherous without cause.
Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.
From Psalm 25
MP 673 : There is a Redeemer
1 There is a Redeemer,
Jesus, God’s own son,
Precious Lamb of God,
Messiah, Holy One.
Chorus Thank You, o my Father,
for giving us your Son,
and leaving Your Spirit
till the work on earth is done.
2 Jesus, my Redeemer,
name above all names,
precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
O for sinner slain;
Chorus
3 When I stand in glory
I will see His face,
and there I’ll serve my King for ever
in that holy place.
Chorus
MP 49 : Be bold be strong
Be bold, be strong,
for the Lord your God is with you;
be bold, be strong,
for the Lord your God is with you!
I am not afraid, (No, No, No!)
I am not dismayed (Not Me!)
for I’m walking in faith and victory;
come and walk in faith and victory,
for the Lord your God is with you.
Reading Luke 4 : 1 – 13
Luke 4 : 1 – 13
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.”
The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendour; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.
If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”
The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
MP 1343: O God, you search me and you know me
1 O God, you search me and you know me,
all my thoughts lie open to your gaze.
When I walk or lie down you are before me:
ever the maker and keeper of my days.
2 You know my resting and my rising.
You discern my purpose from afar,
and with love everlasting you besiege me:
in every moment of life or death, you are.
3 Before a word is on my tongue, Lord,
you have known its meaning through and through.
You are with me beyond my understanding:
God of my present, my past and future too.
4 Although your Spirit is upon me.
still I search for shelter from your light.
There us nowhere on earth I can escape you:
even the darkness is radiant in your sight.
5 For you created me and shaped me.
gave me life within my mother’s womb.
For the wonder of who I am, I praise you:
safe in your hands, all creation is made new.
MP 755: When I survey
1 When I survey the wonderous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ my God:
all the vain things that charm ne most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.
3 See from His head, His hands, His feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down;
did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small,
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.
MP 201: Guide me O thou great Jehovah
1 Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
hold me with Thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven,
Bread of heaven,
feed me now and everymore,
feed me now and everymore.
2 Open now the crystal fountain,
whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fiery, cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer,
Strong deliverer,
be Thou still me strength and shield,
be Thou still me strength and shield.
3 When I treat the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside:
death of death, and hell’s destruction,
land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises,
Songs of praises,
I will ever give to Thee,
I will ever give to Thee
