Call to Worship
The Lord has forsaken me
The Lord has forgotten me
Can a mother forget her baby – have no compassion on the child she has borne?
I will never forget you my people
I will hold you in the palm of my hand
I have engraved you on the palms of my hand

MP 1072 : In Christ alone

1 In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
this cornerstone the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, wen strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all,
here is the love of Christ I stand.

2 In Christ alone – who took on flesh,
fullness of God in helpless Babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
scorned by the ones he came to save
till on that cross as Jesus died,
the wrath of God was satisfied,
for every sin on Him was laid:
here in the death of Christ I stand.

3 There in the ground his body kay,
light of the world by darkness slain,
then, bursting forth in glorious day,
up from the grave, He rose again!
And as he stands in victory
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
for I am His and He is mine –
bought with the precious blood of Christ.

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death,
this is the power of Christ in me;
from life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man
can ever pluck me from His Hand;
till He returns or calls me home,
here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!

JP 139 : Jesus love is very wonderful

Jesus’ love is very wonderful,
Jesus’ love is very wonderful,
Jesus’ love is very wonderful,
O wonderful love!
So high you can’t get over it,
so low you can’t get under it,
so wide you can’t get round it.
O wonderful love!

CH4 706 : For the healing of the nations

1 For the healing of the nations,
Lord, we pray with one accord;
for a just and equal sharing,
of the things that earth affords.
To a life of love in action
help us rise and pledge our word.

2 Lead us forward into freedom,
from despair your world release,
that, redeemed from war and hatred,
all may come and go in peace,
Show us how through care and goodness
fear will die and hope increase.

3 All that kills abundant living,
let it from the earth be banned:
pride of status, race, or schooling,
dogmas that obscure you plan.
In our common quest for justice
may we hallow life’s brief span.

4 You, Creator-God, have written
your great name on humankind;
for our growing in your likeness
bring the life of Christ to mind:
that by our response and service
earth its destiny may find.

Reading Luke 23:32-43 New International Version

Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left.
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.
They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the Jews.
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence?  We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

MP 673: There is a redeemer

1 There is a redeemer,
Jesus, God’s own Son,
precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Holy One.
Chorus: Thank You, O my Father,
for giving us Your Son,
and leaving Your Spirit
till the work on earth is done.

2 Jesus, my Redeemer,
name above all names,
precious Lamb of  God, Messiah
O for sinners slain;

3 When I stand in glory
I will see His face,
and there I’ll serve my King for ever
in that holy place.

MP 201:  Guide me O thou great Jehovah

1 Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
hold me with Thy powerful hand;
Bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore.

2 Open now the crystal fountain,
whence the healing stream doth flow;
let the fiery, cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through;
strong deliverer,
be Thou still my strength and shield.

3 When I tread the verge of Jordan
bid my anxious fears subside:
death or death, and hell’s destruction,
land me safe in Canaan’s side;
songs of praises
I will ever give to Thee.
