Call to Worship

Our God
How precious are your thoughts!
How vast the sum of them!
They outnumber the grains of sand
Only you can search and know our hearts
And our anxious thoughts
So, lead us always
In your everlasting way

CH4 97 : O Lord you search me and you know me

1 O God, you search me and you know me,
all my thoughts lie open to your gaze.
When I walk or lie down you are before me:
ever the maker and keeper of my days.
2 You know my resting and my rising.
You discern my purpose from afar,
and with love everlasting you besiege me:
in every moment of life or death, you are.
3 Before a word is on my tongue, Lord,
you have known its meaning through and through.
You are with me beyond my understanding:
God of my present, my past and future too.
4 Although your Spirit is upon me.
still I search for shelter from your light.
There us nowhere on earth I can escape you:
even the darkness is radiant in your sight.
5 For you created me and shaped me.
gave me life within my mother’s womb.
For the wonder of who I am, I praise you:
safe in your hands, all creation is made new.

Luke 14:25-34. New International Version – UK

The cost of being a disciple

Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:
‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
‘Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?
For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying,
“This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.”
‘Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.
‘Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?

CH4 509/MP 359: Jesus calls us

1 Jesus calls us; o’er the tumult
of our life’s wild reckless sea,
day by day His voice is sounding,
saying, ‘Christian, follow me.’

2 As of old, apostles heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home, and toil, and kindred,
leaving all for His dear sake.

3 Jesus calls us from the worship,
of the vain world’s golden store,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, ‘Christian, love Me more’

4 In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still He calls, in cares and pleasures,
‘Christian, love Me more than these’

5 Jesus call us! By Thy mercies,
Saviour, mat we hear Thy call,
give our hearts to Thine obedience,
serve and love Thee best of all.

MP 381 : Jesus stand among us

1 Jesus, stand among us at the meeting of our lives,
be our sweet agreement at the meeting of our eyes;
O Jesus, we love You, so we gather here,
join our hearts in unity and take away our fear.
2 So to You we’re gathering out of each and every land,
Christ the love between us at the joining of our hands;
O Jesus, we love You, so we gather here,
join our hearts in unity and take away our fear.
3 Jesus stand among us at the breaking of the bread;
join us as one body as we worship You, our Head.
O Jesus, we love You, so we gather here;
Join our hearts in unity and take away our fear.

CH4 559/ MP 637 : There is a redeemer

1 There is a Redeemer,
Jesus, God’s own Son,
precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
Holy One.
Chorus
Thank You, O my Father,
for giving us Your Son,
and leaving Your Spirit
till the work on earth is done.
2 Jesus, my Redeemer,
name above all names,
precious Lamb of God, Messiah,
O for sinners slain.
3 When I stand in glory
I will see His face,
and there I’ll serve my King for ever
in that holy place.

CH4 737 : MP 770: Will your anchor hold

1. Will your anchor hold in the storms of strife,
when the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the string tides lift, and the cable strain,
will your anchor drift, or firm remain?
Chorus: We have an anchor that keeps the soul
steadfast and sure while the billows roll;
fastened to the rock which cannot more,
grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love!
2. Will your anchor hold in the straits of fear,
when the breakers roar and the reef is near?
While the surges rage, and the wild wind blows,
shall the angry waves, then your bark o’erflow?
3. Will your anchor hold in the floods of death,
when the waters cold chill your latest breath?
On the rising tided you can never fail,
while your anchor holds within the veil.
4. Will your eyes behold through the morning light,
the city of gold and the harbour bright?
Will you anchor safe by the heavenly shore,
when life’s storms are past for evermore?
