Acts 16: 16-34\u00a0 [NIV]
\n<\/strong>Once when we were going to the place of prayer,\u00a0we were met by a female slave who had a spirit\u00a0by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, \u201cThese men are servants of the Most High God,\u00a0who are telling you the way to be saved.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, \u201cIn the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!\u201d At that moment the spirit left her.
\nWhen her owners realized that their hope of making money\u00a0was gone, they seized Paul and Silas\u00a0and dragged\u00a0them into the marketplace to face the authorities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>They brought them before the magistrates and said, \u201cThese men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar\u00a0by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans\u00a0to accept or practice.\u201d
\nThe crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten with rods.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer\u00a0was commanded to guard them carefully.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
\nAbout midnight\u00a0Paul and Silas\u00a0were praying and singing hymns\u00a0to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.\u00a0At once all the prison doors flew open,\u00a0and everyone\u2019s chains came loose.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>But Paul shouted, \u201cDon\u2019t harm yourself! We are all here!\u201d
\nThe jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>He then brought them out and asked, \u201cSirs, what must I do to be saved?\u201d
\nThey replied, \u201cBelieve\u00a0in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved\u2014you and your household.\u201d\u00a0Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. \u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>At that hour of the night\u00a0the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he\u00a0was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God\u2014he and his whole household.<\/p>\n
