He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the\u00a0Lord\u00a0had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.<\/p>\n<p>Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman\u2019s wife.\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>She said to her mistress, \u2018If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said.\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>\u2018By all means, go,\u2019 the king of Aram replied. \u2018I will send a letter to the king of Israel.\u2019 So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents\u00a0of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing.\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: \u2018With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, \u2018Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me!\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: \u2018Why have you torn your robes? Make the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.\u2019\u00a0So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha\u2019s house.\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, \u2018Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>But Naaman went away angry and said, \u2018I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn\u2019t I wash in them and be cleansed?\u2019 So he turned and went off in a rage.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Naaman\u2019s servants went to him and said, \u2018My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, \u201cWash and be cleansed\u201d!\u2019\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God. He stood before him and said, \u2018Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift from your servant.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The prophet answered, \u2018As surely as the\u00a0Lord\u00a0lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.\u2019 And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>\u2018If you will not,\u2019 said Naaman, \u2018please let me, your servant, be given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the\u00a0Lord.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MP 51 &#8211; Lord make us servants of your peace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 Lord, make us servants of your peace;<br \/>\nwhere there is hate, may we sow love;<br \/>\nwhere there is hurt, may we forgive;<br \/>\nwhere there is strife, may we make one.<\/p>\n<p>2 Where all is doubt, may we sow faith;<br \/>\nwhere all is gloom, may we sow hope;<br \/>\nwhere all is night, may we sow light;<br \/>\nwhere all is tears, may we sow joy.<\/p>\n<p>3 Jesus, out Lord, may we not seek<br \/>\nto be consoled, but to console,<br \/>\nnot look to understanding hearts,<br \/>\nbut look for hearts to understand.<\/p>\n<p>4 May we not look for love&#8217;s return,<br \/>\nbut seek to love unselfishly,<br \/>\nfor in our giving we receive,<br \/>\nand in forgiving are forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>5 Dying, we live, and are reborn<br \/>\nthrough death&#8217;s dark night to endless day;<br \/>\nLord, may us servants of your peace<br \/>\nto wake at last in heaven&#8217;s light.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CH4 622 &#8211;
