1 God is our strength and refuge,
\nour present help in trouble;
\nand we therefore will not fear,
\nthough the earth should change!
\nThough mountains shake and tremble,
\nthough swirling floods are raging,
\nGod the Lord of hosts
\nis with us evermore!<\/p>\n

2 There is a flowing river,
\nwithin God’s holy city;
\nGod is in the midst of her –
\nshe shall not be moved!

Hymn CH4 718: We cannot measure<\/p>\n

1 We cannot measure how we heal
\nor answer every sufferer’s prayer,
\nyet we believe your grace responds
\nwhere faith and doubt unite to care.
\nYour hands, though bloodied on the cross,
\nsurvive to hold and heal and warn,
\nto carry all through death to life
\nand cradle children yet unborn.<\/p>\n

2 The pain that will not go away;
\nthe guilt that clings from things long past,
\nthe fear of what the future holds,
\nare present as if meant to last.
\nBut present too is love which tends
\nthe hurt we never hope to find,
\nthe private agonies inside,
\nthe memories that haunt the mind.<\/p>\n

3 So some have come who need your help
\nand some have come to make amends
\nas hands which shaped and saved the world
\nas present in the touch of friends\/
\nLord, let your Spirit meet us here
\nto mend the body, mind and soul,
\nto disentangle peace from pain

\n<\/em>After Saul’s death David came back from his victory over the Amalekites and stayed in Ziklag for two days.<\/p>\n

Reading <\/em>2 Samuel 17-27
\n<\/em>David took up this lament\u00a0concerning Saul and his son Jonathan, and he ordered that the people of Judah be taught this lament of the bow (it is written in the Book of Jashar):
\n\u201cA gazelle[<\/sup>a<\/sup><\/a>]<\/sup> lies slain on your heights, Israel. How the mighty\u00a0have fallen!
\n\u201cTell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
\nlest the daughters of the Philistines be glad,\u00a0lest the daughters of the uncircumcised rejoice.
\n\u201cMountains of Gilboa, may you have neither dew nor rain,
\nmay no showers fall on your terraced fields.
\nFor there the shield of the mighty was despised,
\nthe shield of Saul\u2014no longer rubbed with oil.
\n\u201cFrom the blood of the slain, from the flesh of the mighty,
\nthe bow of Jonathan did not turn back, the sword of Saul did not return unsatisfied.
\nSaul and Jonathan\u2014in life they were loved and admired,
\nand in death they were not parted.
\nThey were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
\n\u201cDaughters of Israel, weep for Saul,
\nwho clothed you in scarlet and finery,
\nwho adorned your garments with ornaments of gold.
\n\u201cHow the mighty have fallen in battle!
\nJonathan lies slain on your heights.
\nI grieve\u00a0for you, Jonathan\u00a0my brother;
\nyou were very dear to me.
\nYour love for me was wonderful,
\nmore wonderful than that of women.
\n\u201cHow the mighty have fallen!
\nThe weapons of war have perished!\u201d<\/p>\n

1\u00a0 Gone are the wild lands, forests and islands.
\nGone is the birdsong before break of day.
\nNature is weeping, her sad vigil keeping.
\nGod\u2019s good creation is wasting away.<\/p>\n
