MP 708 To God be the glory<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 To God be the glory! great things He hath done;
\nso loved He the world that He gave us His Son;
\nwho yielded His life an atonement for sin,
\nand opened the life gate that all may go in.<\/p>\n

Philip and the Ethiopian\u00a0 Acts 8: 26-39<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, \u2018Go south to the road\u00a0\u2013 the desert road\u00a0\u2013 that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means \u2018queen of the Ethiopians\u2019). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The Spirit told Philip, \u2018Go to that chariot and stay near it.\u2019
\nThen Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. \u2018Do you understand what you are reading?\u2019 Philip asked.
\n\u2018How can I,\u2019 he said, \u2018unless someone explains it to me?\u2019 So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
\nThis is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
\n\u2018He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
\nand as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
\nso he did not open his mouth.
\nIn his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
\nWho can speak of his descendants?
\nFor his life was taken from the earth.\u2019
\nThe eunuch asked Philip, \u2018Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
\nAs they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, \u2018Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptised?\u2019\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.<\/p>\n

CH4 606 Lord you sometimes speak in wonders<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 Lord, you sometimes speak in wonders
\nunmistakable and clear;
\nmighty signs to prove your presence,
\novercoming doubt and fear.<\/p>\n

2 Lord, you sometimes speak in whispers,
\nstill and small and scarcely heard;
\nonly those who want to listen
\ncatch the all-important word.<\/p>\n

3 Lord, you sometimes speak in silence,
\nthrough our loud and noisy day:
\nwe can know and trust you better
\nwhen we quietly wait and pray.<\/p>\n

4 Lord, you love to speak in Scripture:
\nwords that summon from the page,
\nshown and taught us by your Spirit
\nwith fresh light for every age.<\/p>\n

5 Lord, you always speak in Jesus,
\nalways new yet still the same;
\nteach us now more of our Saviour;
\nmake our lives display his Name.<\/p>\n
